BEACHES
The coastline is home to numerous coves, easily accessible from San Miguel by bicycle, scooter or cab.
In addition to its seabed, Cozumel Island is famous for its beaches. Those of the west coast are more suitable for swimming, because the coastline has many creeks and the waves are less strong. They are easily accessible from San Miguel by bike, scooter or taxi. Almost all the beaches on the west coast have a beach club, i.e. a bar and restaurant that provides sunbeds and umbrellas for customers to use. In some cases you only have to order a drink or a dish to use the facilities, in others you have to pay an entrance fee, but the range of services offered is generally wide: beachside swimming pool, showers and changing rooms, diving pier, and inflatable games in the sea. Most beach clubs sell day passes that include transportation to and from San Miguel. From Punta Sur, on the east coast, the beaches are practically virgin, but with much stronger waves. If you have a vehicle, it is easy to stop at several places and discover several beaches in the same day. Playa San Martín, where the sea turtles lay their eggs, is quite magnificent, the water is of a rare transparency. Further north, Playa Chen Río is very popular with the locals, as the rocks form a kind of natural pool where you can swim. All along the road, you will find small restaurants and bars where you can take a break.
