CASA DEL CENOTE
Building built above a limestone rock that hides the presence of a cenote, and has a portico with three entrances
The Casa del Cenote is a building constructed above a limestone rock that conceals the presence of a cenote. Cenotes used to offer fresh water to the inhabitants, but the water in this one is now brackish and dirty, due to bat droppings. The building has a portico with three entrances and two stone benches inside. In the center of the building is a tomb. Its presence not far from the cenote is explained by the fact that, for the Maya, these natural cavities represented the entrance to Xibalbá, the underworld.
