Throughout Andalusia, the pasos, decorated altars laden with flowers, are paraded during this major religious festival.
It is certainly the most important religious festival in Seville. Day and night, thousands of hooded penitents walk through the streets, accompanied by religious music and the smell of incense and burning wax. Pasos(very heavy portable altars) are decorated, taken out of their churches and walked through the streets of Seville. The main figures of these processions are the statues of the Virgin of La Macarena (the most venerated in the city), the Esperanza de Triana, the Christ of the Cachorro and Our Father Jesus del gran Poder, made in the 17th century.
