SANTA CATALINA CHURCH
Gothic-Mudejar style church that reopened on November 25, 2018
After fourteen years of closure, this 14th-century Gothic-Mudejar church reopened its doors on November 25, 2018. After an investment of over 3 million euros by the Archdiocese of Seville. Work initially focused on repairing the badly deteriorated roof (2009-2010), then underwent various interruptions before being resumed in 2014, under the direction of architect Francisco Jurado, previously at the helm of restorations of the Segovia aqueduct, the Church of los Jerónimo in Madrid or the Mosque de la Luz in Toledo. The renovation has brought to light numerous archaeological remains from the Roman era, which can be visited once the 4-metre-deep crypt containing them has been fully opened to the public. The renovation also made it possible to recover the entire Mudejar-style entrance door, which had previously only been partially visible. All the paintings, altarpieces and furniture have also been restored, including the central chapel, an authentic jewel.
