PLAZA DE LA SUSONA
Square that was made famous by the character who gave it its name in Seville
The square was made famous by the character who gave it its name. Known for her beauty, she was the daughter of Diego Susón, a Jewish convert, but also the friend of a young Christian. Shortly after the start of the Inquisition in 1478, Jews from Seville gathered in the city to fight against the Spanish state, with her father among the leaders. Fearing the consequences of a possible uprising, she informed her Christian friend, who in turn informed the mayor of Seville. All the conspirators were arrested and sentenced to death. Deeply remorseful for her betrayal of her father, she cloistered herself in a convent and ordered that, on her death, her head should be hanged from the door of her house in the Santa Cruz district, as a reminder of her betrayal.
