MARÍA LUISA PARK
Welcome to this green lung of Seville, where you can enjoy the freshness, the fountains and the rich subtropical vegetation.
The present María Luisa Park (38 ha) dates from the Ibero-American Exhibition of 1929, but it had already existed for a long time. At the time when the court of the Montpensier family was in Seville, it was part of the Palacio San Telmo. In the 19th century, the Infanta María Luisa donated it to the city, and the gardens of Las Delicias and those of Huerto de Mariana were added. In 1911, work began to turn it into a public park and later the site of the Exhibition. Its layout is in the French style, designed by Jean-Claude Nicolas Forestier. The rich vegetation is subtropical: there are no less than 3,500 trees, including almost 1,000 palms, but also banana trees, magnolias, orange trees, chestnut trees, lemon trees, eucalyptus... Do not miss the Fuente de las Ranas (Fountain of the Frogs) and the Isleta de los Patos (Little Island of the Ducks), where there is a charming pavilion where, according to legend, King Alfonso XII declared his love to María de las Mercedes. The Glorieta de Bécquer, the monument to Coullaut Valera, pays tribute to the Sevillian poet.
Finally, the Plaza de América, designed by the architect Aníbal González, is the place of honour for the 1929 Exhibition. There are three magnificent pavilions: Mudéjar, Royal and Renaissance or Plateresque.
Also the Military History Museum, Puerta de Aragón ✆ +34 954 938 283. Open Monday to Friday from 9:30 am to 2 pm and Saturday from 10 am to 2 pm (closed in August) and free admission. Small fountains, benches and the square are usually overrun with doves.
