PRIORAL DE SANTA MARIA AND MUSEUM OF SACRED ART
The most important Gothic style church in the city, now called the Orange Tree Courtyard in Carmona
This is the city's most important church, whose construction began in 1424 and was completed in 1551. Essentially Gothic in style, it nevertheless bears signs of the Baroque, such as the Puerta del Sol and the sacramental chapel, dating from the late 17th century. Built on the site of the city's largest mosque, all that remains of the Moorish period is a superb patio, de las abluvationes, now known as the patio of orange trees. One of its columns features a 6th-century Visigoth calendar. Inside the church, note the beautiful main altarpiece, a major work of Andalusian plateresque. The church also houses a museum of sacred art, including a medieval sculpture of the Virgen de Gracia, the town's patron saint.
