IGLESIA DE LOS DESCALZOS
Church remarkable for its interior decorations, made in the seventeenth century
Inaugurated in the early 17th century, this church is most remarkable for its 18th-century interior decorations, which make it a veritable jewel of Andalusian Baroque. The first thing you'll discover is the church's lavish ornamentation, featuring wall paintings and gilded, polychromed plasterwork in exuberant geometric and plant forms. Accompanied by paintings, sculptures and woodwork which, along with the 18th-century organ, make it a symbol of Baroque in Ecija. The main niche houses an 18th-century sculpture of the Virgen del Carmen, and the sculpture of the Imaculada, from the same period, decorates the attic. The church's exterior façade, designed by Ignacio Tomás, comes from the now-defunct Carmelite convent.
