BENAMEJÍ PALACE - MUNICIPAL HISTORICAL MUSEUM
Architectural jewel that marked the golden age of the city to become a model of Spanish Baroque civil architecture
Built at the beginning of the eighteenth century, this palace is one of the small architectural jewels that marked the golden age of the city of Écija to become also a model of civil architecture of Spanish baroque. Originally, this building belonged to the marquis of Benamejí and subsequently hosted a military horse training center to finally become the headquarters of the municipal historic museum in 1997. From the outset, we are struck by its imposing facade, built in brick with a stone plinth and two large towers at the ends. On the ground floor you can visit the stables of the palace of Benamejí, dating back to the eighteenth century, which houses a visual interpretation center of the equestrian world in Écija (saddles, ancient coupling, costumes, posters and audiovisual). You will also enjoy the Mirador de Benamejí, at the corner of Cánovas del Castillo street, a series of porches and galleries open on two or three floors. Extremely pedagogical and well-scripted, the municipal museum contains many archeological remains, such as a collection of prehistoric metal objects, three warrior stakes and Pieza de Écija, a unique piece of goldsmith dating from the Tartessos civilization. There are also beautiful Roman mosaics as well as various material for the Roman or Islamic era. And this is where we can admire the Amazon herida, the wounded Amazon, exhumed during excavations carried out on Plaza de Espana in 2002.
