On 2 January Granada commemorates the handing over of the city's keys to the Catholic kings by King Boabdil, the last Moorish king in 1492.
Every year, the city celebrates the toma, taken from Granada in commemoration of 2 January 1492, the date on which King Boabdil "el chico" handed over the keys of the city to the Catholic Monarchs. The festivities begin with a visit to the tombs of the Catholic Monarchs, located in the Capilla Real, followed by a mass celebrated in the cathedral. At the end a parade of local authorities runs through the city with a replica of the banner that Fernand the Catholic offered to the city. The ceremony ended with the presentation of the banner on the balcony of the town hall.
