BASILICA SAN JUAN DE DIOS
Baroque church with numerous paintings, sculptures and art objects
Built in the first half of the 18th century, it is one of the most important Baroque churches in Granada and Spain. It was the Prior Fray Alonso de Jesús Ortega who pushed forward its construction with the aim of welcoming the remains of San Juan de Dios, founder of a hospital order. It has a magnificent baroque door, flanked by two towers with slate capitals. Following a Latin cross plan, it is arranged around a central nave and side chapels, with a dome above the transept crossing. In the choir, there is a large gilded wooden churrigueresque altarpiece hiding a camarín, composed of three rooms decorated in the baroque style. And especially the golden colour, dominating the whole as well as the many paintings, sculptures and wood carvings and the presence of many art objects. Near the church, there is also a small hospital also founded by San Juan de Dios.
