The first walls of what is now the Convento de Nuestra Señora de Belén were built in 1712. By 1718, the church and the first cloister were completed. The convent, in baroque style, was the first religious building in Havana. First occupied by the monks of the Order of Belém, it was succeeded by the Jesuits, before becoming the headquarters of the Academy of Sciences. It is now a retirement home, one of the most successful social projects in the city.
