Built on a hill formerly known as Peña Pobre (Poor Rock), then Loma del Ángel (Angel Hill), the Santo Ángel Custodio church was declared an auxiliary parish in 1690. The present neo-Gothic building dates from 1866 and is one of the finest examples of 19th-century religious architecture. Its caramel-colored steeple bristles with slender spires ready to soar into the azure. At the back of the building, twenty-three steps lead up to the foot of the hill.
