1871. The first great war of independence, which began in 1868, was raging. The tomb of a Spanish journalist, an ardent supporter of the crown, was desecrated in Havana. Immediately, several medical students were arrested and accused. Their guilt will never be established. No matter: eight of them, chosen by lot, were shot. The voluntarios, a colonial militia, wanted to make an example of the student protesters. This monument commemorates them.
