This palace was built in 1741 by Don Diego Peñalver, treasurer of the royal household, and restored by his son, Ignacio Peñalver, who became Marquis of Arcos in 1762. Like his father, the Marquis was also the collector of royal taxes and set up the offices of the Treasury here. Towards the middle of the 19th century, the palace became the headquarters of the post office and then, in 1844, the Liceo Artístico y Literario, a meeting and party place for all the posh youth of Havana.
