MUSEO HISTÓRICO DE LAS CIENCIAS NATURALES
This building was the seat of the Royal Academy of Medical, Physical and Natural Sciences of Havana from 1868. The Academy's meeting room preserves its original furniture. It was here that the Cuban scientist Carlos Finlay (the man after whom the museum is named) revealed that the Aedes aegypty mosquito transmits yellow fever. This museum, the oldest in the country, exhibits collections related to the history of Cuban medical sciences and important documents from the 19th century on the research of Carlos Finlay. It also has a library of 95,000 volumes and an extraordinary historical picture library. The building that houses the museum is, in itself, a true gem of 19th-century architecture. It was in its hemicycle that the scientist Albert Einstein gave his only public speech in 1930, during a stay in Havana. In 1960, Fidel Castro inscribed in the building these words: "The future of our Homeland can only be a future of men of science", words that have become the motto of the Cuban scientific world. Don't miss the replica of a 19th century pharmacy with its Sevres porcelain pots in the museum. Whether you are a science enthusiast or not, a visit to this museum should not be missed when you are in the center of Habana Vieja; budding or experienced scientists will have no choice!
