UNIVERSIDAD DE LA HABANA
Founded in 1728 as the Real Pontífica Universidad de San Gerónimo de La Habana, its construction was requested in 1721 by Pope Innocent XIII and approved by King Felipe V. At the beginning, the university had only five faculties and was located in what is now called Habana Vieja (Old Havana), at the corner of Obispo and Mercaderes streets. The University of Havana is intimately linked to the history of the city and of the whole country. Its grand staircase is the setting or starting point for most of the great student demonstrations, like San Lázaro Street, which it dominates. In the 1930s, the students of the University of Havana, led by the leaders of the FEU, the Federación de Estudiantes Universitarios (Federation of University Students), confronted the repressive forces during the dictatorship of Gerardo Machado. Later, during the regime of Fulgencio Batista, the university was again the scene of numerous demonstrations when student groups took up arms to overthrow him. On March 13, 1957, José Antonio Echeverría, president of the Student Federation, was shot by the police a few meters from the university. Later, the university became too small and new facilities were built on new land to accommodate its different faculties. This is the case of the Faculty of Medicine, which is currently located in the Siboney district, and the Faculty of Technology.
