NATIONAL MUSEUM
The National Museum in Kampala has been temporarily closed for major renovations from August1, 2024. Renovation work is scheduled to last 10 months, with reopening scheduled for May 2025. Founded in 1908, the Uganda Museum is the oldest museum in East Africa. The museum is divided into different sections dedicated to science and industry, ethnography, natural history, traditional music... As you wander around, you'll be able to contemplate customary clothing and ornaments, Soga and Hutu shields, typical bark fabrics, Acholi and Karamojong headrests, Karamoja sandals made from elephant leather, pottery, plant fiber baskets, an old Ford T and traditional musical instruments. You can also read about archaeological sites dating back to the Stone Age,African tea, the Ugandan mining industry, the Olympic Games and, in particular, the two gold-medal-winning Cranes, Stephen Kiprotich (marathon at the London Olympics, 2012) and John Akii-Bua (400-meter hurdles at the Munich Olympics, 1972), the "Luzira head" (a 1,000-year-old terracotta female head discovered in the 1920s-1930s by a British geologist in Luzira and now housed in London's British Museum), the discovery of the fossilized remains of the "Napak rhinoceros" (19-20 million years old) and the various types of craft beer consumed in the country...
