BETA MESKEL
10 m x 3 m semi-monolithic troglodytic church with ten bas-relief arches symbolizing the Ten Commandments.
The "House of the Cross" is located to the south of the central courtyard of Beta Maryam. It is a semi-monolithic troglodytic church measuring 10 m by 3 m, carved into the wall and quite elongated. Of the four pillars, only one is in the shape of a Greek cross. Here you can admire an example of a menbere tabot, a small, richly carved wooden chest designed to hold the replica of the Tables of the Law, placed in the Holy of Holies (the maqdas). In fact, its south-facing façade is adorned with ten bas-relief arches symbolizing the Ten Commandments.
