LEBANESE BETA ABBA
Church built in twenty-four hours by King Lalibela's wife, with dangerously cracked front walls and crumbly rock..
Legend has it that the church was built in 24 hours by Meskal Kebran, the wife of King Lalibela, assisted by angels. This haste no doubt explains the fragility of the sanctuary, carved out of crumbly rock and with its facade walls dangerously cracked. Perhaps aware of this fragility, the architects decided not to detach the roof of the edifice from the rock in order to relieve the structure, making it a hypogeum (underground) church. Ethiopians see this façade as a representation of a covered tabot.
