You don't have to go all the way to Antarctica to see penguins! Three different species populate New Zealand's coasts. On Akaroa, it's the smallest (and cutest) of them all that you can see: the little blue penguin. The Helps family has been actively involved in protecting the colony ever since these charming birds made their home here. A visit to the colony gives you the privilege of observing the penguins in their natural habitat, while helping to protect them.

Kayaking guide helped us see lots of seals and a few penguins. Gypsy wagon was very cute and cozy.

Outstanding tour with Viola at Pōhatu penguins!! We had an amazing time. Viola is an excellent guide - so knowledgeble and passionate. Pōhatu penguins works on conservation and research so you know that the money for your tour is going to a good cause. We had an incredible kayak ride. The equipment was great, we always felt safe, and we had a blast. And we got to see penguins and fur seals and lots of other wildlife. What a spectacular day! Highly recommended!

Encore merci !

Awesome tours - we did the evening penguin walk and the kayaking tour the next day. We saw penguins, an eel, sheep, several native bird species. The drive was a bit nerve-wracking with narrow road and cliff side views - I was super happy not to be driving ????. We stayed in Akaroa specifically to get a ride for the tours. I would strongly recommend not doing the self-drive unless you have a ton of experience driving on 4wd tracks. On the kayak tour, we saw swimming penguins and lots of seals. We would definitely do this again.
