Established in 1908, John's Grill is not only one of the oldest restaurants in San Francisco, it is also the place that Dashiell Hammett chose as a backdrop for his novel The Maltese Falcon. The menu is extensive, you can order an omelette, a (huge and expensive) prime rib, or mussels marinière. But more than to dine, one comes there for a very gangster atmosphere of the 1930s, mythical of the West Coast, and one appreciates to drink there leaning on the bar of the restaurant, while listening to jazz.

The food was great, the people not so much. I came for an early dinner, sat at the bar. The bartender took my order and we discussed how to course it out, well before I could take a spoonful of my soup, my salad gets dropped next to me, luckily I was the only one at the bar as there isn't allot of space. As I am eating, I noticed the bartender cutting up fruit for garnish, however he wasn't using a cutting board but was using a small service tray turned upside down. I also noticed may cut marks on the bottom of they tary which shows me this is their SOP and that micro plastics are definitely being smeared on the fruit as those trays are not designed for food prep. When the steak came out they finally cleared my soup bowl and salad plate, luckily the steak was perfectly cooked and tasted great. Lastly when I closed my tab and paid as I walked out, the manager (I assumed as he was in a suit) was standing at the hosts stand, and didn't even acknowledge me or say thank you or have a good evening. The entrance to this place is super tiny, so is no way he could have not seen me. So to the kitchen keep up the great work, to the front of the house, try a bit harder and stop using service trays for things they shouldn't be used for.

Another great find whilst in San Fran. Beautiful restaurant with an elite menu of everything you would expect from a downtown bar and grill. Top notch service and steaks were superb. Special mention to the Lobster Ravioli! ????????
