HOTEL MAJESTIC * * *
This hotel, built in 1902, is one of the very first large hotels in San Francisco
Built in 1902, the Majestic Hotel is one of San Francisco's very first grand hotels. Located in the Victorian neighborhood of Pacific Heights, it was miraculously spared by the 1906 earthquake. The historic elevator is a museum piece. The rooms are decorated in an atypically old-fashioned style, with four-poster beds adorned with draped fabrics and tapestries inspired by the 1920s. You'll appreciate the high ceilings, the breakfast included and the cocktail bar. At this level of luxury, service is excellent.

We checked in on Friday around 4 pm. The woman who checked us in was an older woman with blonde hair. As soon as we went up to the room I noticed it was not the room I booked based on the photos from the hotel’s website. I had booked a junior queen suite. The room they put us in (503) was definitely smaller and looked more like the standard queen room on their website. When we went down to leave for dinner, maybe 45 minutes later, I asked the woman what type of room 503 was and she said it was a junior queen suite. I told her it didn’t look like the photos online and she said “oh really? It’s a junior queen suite. We don’t downgrade, we can only upgrade.” I said okay thanks and we left.
The next morning at checkout, I asked the girl at the reception desk. This girl was a younger brunette. I asked her what the difference was between the standard queen room and the junior queen suite. She said the junior suite has a four poster bed, a couch, and is larger. I told her that’s what I thought and that I had booked the junior queen. I explained the conversation that I had with the other woman yesterday and she said yeah, we have that problem all the time with 503. I’ve told my manager several times before that it doesn’t look like the pictures and guests often get upset. She also asked me if the other woman told me that they were full or offered to change my room and I said no, she just pretended like nothing was wrong.
The room they put us in was fine. It was clean, there was nothing wrong but it wasn’t what we paid for. The second girl told me that there was about a $20 difference between the two rooms. I booked with cc points so I didn’t care to make a big deal about it. I told her I appreciated her honesty because the it definitely felt like the first woman was gaslighting me.
The take away is if you book a junior queen suite, they may downgrade your room and lie to you about it ????????♀️
