Founded by Bill English and Susi Damilano as a 501 (c) 3 nonprofit organization in 2003, San Francisco Playhouse is the Bay Area's first mid-sized theater company. Staging six plays and musicals a year in its 199-seat Mainstage Theater on Post Street, as well as three world premieres a year on intimate stages in downtown San Francisco, the Playhouse presents more than 400 performances a year. In 2015, the San Francisco Playhouse received the American Theatre Wing's National Theatre Company Fellowship, making it eligible for regional Tony Awards. The San Francisco Playhouse has hosted several nationally and internationally acclaimed world premieres, including Theresa Rebeck's Seared, Aaron Loeb's Ideation, Lauren Yee's In a Word and George Brant's Grounded.
