The Franciscan version of Carnival was launched in 1979. Today, it runs through the Mission District for two days from 10am to 6pm on the last weekend in May, celebrating Latin American and Caribbean arts and traditions. The event is produced by Mission Neighborhood Centres and raises funds for charities dedicated to children, families and the elderly. It's also an opportunity to elect the King and Queen of Carnival! The De Young Museum hosts the launch party in the week leading up to the event.
