At Chinese New Year, a huge party fills the streets of Chinatown; it is the largest event of its kind outside Asia.
In the 1860s, the Chinese community that settled in San Francisco with the California Gold Rush, around 1849, relied on a particularly popular American custom, the parade, to celebrate a part of their culture. The tradition has remained: lanterns, flags, firecrackers... Today, every Chinese New Year, a gigantic party fills the streets of Chinatown. It is the biggest event of its kind outside Asia.
