Founded in 1995, this association set itself the goal of preserving the history of the LGBT community. This is one of the largest historical archives in the world that specializes in the LGBT community. This historic society originated in the GLBT museum which opened in 2011 in Castro.

In January 2011, GLBT Historical Society opened a new museum: the GLBT History Museum (museum of history gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgenre) and the second in the world of its kind, after Berlin. The GLBT History Museum is located 4127 18th Street in Castro, the famous gay district San Francisco. All exhibitions and activities Historical Society now are available at the new museum, which is open Monday and Tuesday to Saturday of 11:00 to 19:00 and Sunday from noon to 17:00 (closed Tuesday).
