Symbolic pyramidal tower of 260 m high, with a futuristic and innovative shape, with different companies.
With its 260 meters, it has been the highest and most symbolic tower of the city for more than 45 years. It is as much a symbol of the city as the Golden Gate Bridge. However, at the time of the awarding of the competition in 1968, this innovative project by architect William Pereira was highly controversial. The public had a hard time accepting this futuristic and innovative shape. But the mayor at the time, Joseph Alioto, insisted that it be built. Criticism continued openly until 1972, during the construction: " This is anti-social architecture at its worst. A form of anarchy and disruption," wrote Johan Pastier, an architecture journalist in the Los Angeles Time. Today, however, San Francisco would not be what it is without its famous pyramid, even if it is no longer the city's tallest skyscraper, surpassed by the 326-meter Salesforce Tower inaugurated in January 2018 at 415 Mission Street in SoMa.
Today, the Transamerica Pyramid is no longer the headquarters of Transamerica Corporation, an American insurance (social, pension) and investment holding company. The pyramid tower now houses more than fifty different companies.
Please note that the pyramid is not open to the public. One can only admire from the outside this symbolic building that can be seen in many films and series. A camera on top of the pyramid allows you to see what is happening on the roofs of San Francisco live on the Kron4TV website.
