PEACE PAGODA
Peace Pagoda, a minimalist concrete work 30 m high on 5 levels, in the center of Japan Center Mall, a gift from the city of Osaka.
The 30-meter high Peace Pagoda in the center of the Japan Center Mall embodies Japanese art. This minimalist concrete work on five levels created by artist Yoshiro Tanigushi was a gift from the city of Osaka to its little sister San Francisco in 1968. The Tokioka politician envisioned it as a symbol of Japanese-American friendship, just as the Statue of Liberty was a symbol of French-American friendship. This sculpture blends in beautifully with the cherry trees in the square and is a meeting place for the entire community.
