Completed in 1937, the huge red bridge offers breathtaking views of the ocean or the bay. It is the most famous bridge in the United States and the most loved by Americans: 2,737 meters long and 27 meters wide. When they cross it, vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists travel more than 67 meters above the surface of the water, in six lanes. Before the bridge was built, the only way for people to cross the bay was by ferry, but the idea of building a bridge soon followed. Joseph Strauss, an architect who designed nearly 500 bridges, was given the responsibility for the project. He designed the most complex and, above all, the longest suspension bridge ever built. It cost the American authorities more than 35 million dollars, and the inauguration took place in 1935. It resisted very well to the earthquake of Loma Prieta in 1989. The violent tremors shook the suspension lines between the cables and the roadway, but it reacted as Joseph Strauss' team had predicted: it pitched, absorbing the seismic forces, before releasing them through its vibrations and movements. The Golden Gate Bridge can be visited from Battery Lancaster (963 Lincoln Bd). It is accessible by Golden Gate Transit or San Francisco Muni buses. The Golden Gate Welcome Center is the starting point for organized tours and walking and biking tours of the bridge.

Le goldengate, c'est cliché. Mais vraiment dur d'y résister! Et il faut avouer qu'il est majestueux! Sa traversée, notamment à pieds, constitue une ballade sympa qui permet de mieux contempler la baie. A faire et à refaire!

Superbe évidemment. Superbe journée bien que j'aurais voulu voir cette fameuse arrivée du brouillard d'un coup. Heureusement pas défiguré par des dispositifs anti-suicide malgré son taux de "jumpers". Il y a d'ailleurs des messages très fréquents pour empêcher cela.

Le Golden Gate est un incontournable de San Francisco. Malheureusement nous l'avons vu sous les nuages et dans le froid en plein mois d'août, ce qui est fréquent à cette époque! On peut le traverser en vélo d'un côté et à pied de l'autre

C'était nuageux le jour où je suis allé au Golden Gate Bridge, mais quoi qu'il en soit, c'était très impressionnant et très agréable. N'oubliez pas votre appareil photo grand angle pour cette vue panoramique magnifique, et/ou votre perche pour pouvoir vous prendre vous-même en face du pont!

The golden gate le symbole de san Francisco ....
on le voit tellement souvent dans des reportages , films.... que quand on y est on ressent quelque chose de fort ...
il est grandiose meme si il y a toujours de la brume c est aussi ce qui fait son charme
on peut le traverser en vélo a pied ou en voiture....
a voir absoluement....
