The huge red bridge offers breathtaking views of the ocean or the bay. It is the most famous bridge in the United States.

Completed in 1937, the huge red bridge offers breathtaking views of the ocean or the bay. It is the most famous bridge in the United States and the most loved by Americans: 2,737 meters long and 27 meters wide. When they cross it, vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists travel more than 67 meters above the surface of the water, in six lanes. Before the bridge was built, the only way for people to cross the bay was by ferry, but the idea of building a bridge soon followed. Joseph Strauss, an architect who designed nearly 500 bridges, was given the responsibility for the project. He designed the most complex and, above all, the longest suspension bridge ever built. It cost the American authorities more than 35 million dollars, and the inauguration took place in 1935. It resisted very well to the earthquake of Loma Prieta in 1989. The violent tremors shook the suspension lines between the cables and the roadway, but it reacted as Joseph Strauss' team had predicted: it pitched, absorbing the seismic forces, before releasing them through its vibrations and movements. The Golden Gate Bridge can be visited from Battery Lancaster (963 Lincoln Bd). It is accessible by Golden Gate Transit or San Francisco Muni buses. The Golden Gate Welcome Center is the starting point for organized tours and walking and biking tours of the bridge.
