TELEPHONE BUILDING
The first large skyscraper and the tallest in the city of San Francisco with an elevator and black marble steps.
Architect Timothy Pflueger, known for cinemas such as the Castro, designed this Art Deco building in the heart of SoMa. Inaugurated on May 30, 1925, the Pacific Telephone Building was San Francisco's first skyscraper and tallest building, just a stone's throw from the SF MoMa and the St Regis. Inside, black marble steps, an elevator with bronze doors and Chinese masks. The entrance is disproportionately large. Note the eagles sculpted on the top. It is nevertheless hit by the crisis affecting SF, with a third of offices unoccupied by 2024.
