Museum in the heart of Golden Gate Park featuring modern and contemporary works as well as temporary exhibitions
Nestled in the heart of Golden Gate Park, this building with its astonishing perspectives was designed by the famous Swiss architects Herzog et de Meuron. The museum houses a succession of galleries featuring works from the 17th to the 21st century, including American paintings (including a trompe-l'oeil room), and works from Africa, Oceania and the Americas. The permanent collection includes antique pieces, such as Greek statues over 5,000 years old and Egyptian works, as well as modern and contemporary pieces, including canvases by French Impressionist painters and even African fabrics. Highlights include a painting of Claude Monet's Water Lilies, as well as a copy of Rodin's sculpture of The Thinker, dating from the early 20th century. Older works include Florentine paintings by Fra Angelico, dating from the early Italian Renaissance, as well as a Christian Dior dress from the 1950s, sketches by Gauguin, Flemish paintings by Rembrandt, 19th-century African figurines... It takes time to discover the permanent collection, especially as many prestigious temporary exhibitions are also organized here. Allow a good half-day for this visit, coupled with that of Legion of Honor if you're an art lover. After visiting these museums, you'll have the opportunity to stroll through the magnificent gardens that link the site to the California Academy of Sciences.
