Like its counterpart in New York, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art blends permanent collections with major temporary exhibitions.
The West Coast version of New York's MoMA, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art presents permanent collections and programs events and temporary exhibitions. Its renovation, which took three years and cost around $300 million, caused quite a stir and gave the museum a new international stature. It has become the largest venue for contemporary art in the United States, with a threefold increase in space to almost 16,000 square metres, and a threefold increase in the collection itself to over 30,000 works. The renovation was necessitated by the decision of GAP's owner couple, the Fishers, to loan their collection to the museum for 100 years. Their collection includes over 1,000 pieces by contemporary artists such as Anselm Kiefer, Roy Lichtenstein, Gerhard Richter, Richard Serra and Andy Warhol, and space was needed to house them. The museum's directors also took the opportunity to design an entire floor devoted to contemporary photography. No fewer than 19 exhibitions were organized within SFMoMA to celebrate the reopening of the now mythical California museum in May 2016. It's a real pleasure to wander between the exhibitions, from floor to floor. Allow plenty of time if you're passionate about modern and contemporary art. The rooms on the lower floors are dedicated to permanent exhibitions, the upper floors to temporary ones.
