Charming scenic alley in San Francisco, classified as a historic site, with a splendid view of the Bay Area and Alcatraz.
Macondray Lane is the charming, scenic alley that inspired the famous Barbary Lane in Armistead Maupin's San Francisco Chronicles. A wooded enclave and a little paradise in the heart of the city, the alley was designated a historic site in 1988. Only a few blocks long, the end of the street leads to a splendid view of the Bay Area and Alcatraz. Not to be missed during a walk! The writer, who came from a middle-class background and was later a strong advocate for LGBT rights, inspired the Netflix documentary The Untold Fales of Armistead Maupin.
