HARVEY MILK PLAZA
Place with a plaque and a large rainbow flag symbol of gay culture, in tribute to Harvey Milk
The first thing you see when you get out of the subway is a plaque in tribute to Harvey Milk. A leader of the gay community, he was one of the first politicians to speak openly about his sexuality in the United States. He was elected to the San Francisco City Council in 1977 and was assassinated in 1978. The jury was not severe enough with the murderer Dan White, and the sentence provoked big revolts in the city. The freedom flag, the big rainbow flag symbol of the gay culture, has been flying over the square since that date.
