GOLD MOUNTAIN MONASTERY
Temple, educational center and monastery in San Francisco featuring a prayer room with an altar filled with offerings
This exceptional place in the heart of Chinatown stands out with its pagoda roof. It is at once a temple, an educational center on the Buddhist religion and a monastery. Buddhist nuns, who take four years to become nuns, chant three times a day at 4am, 11am and in the afternoon. Chanting sometimes lasts up to 5 hours. They eat only once a day, and as slowly as possible. Before eating, they ask themselves five essential questions about the meal (merit, sacrifice, strength, greed, etc.). In the prayer room, the altar is filled with offerings.
