PARAMOUNT THEATRE
Gigantic multi-purpose theater in Oakland restored to its original splendor and once again hosting all the arts.
Built in 1931, the Paramount Theatre is a gigantic, magnificent Art Deco theater, part cinema, part concert hall, part theater and part ballet stage. After a succession of owners who struggled to maintain it, it was finally sold to the city for a symbolic dollar in 1975. Today, the Paramount has regained its former splendor and activity. You won't want to miss its impressive facade, depicting a man and a woman in gilded mosaics. The grandiose lobby is well worth a visit. Guided tour every Saturday.
