OAKLAND MUSEUM OF CALIFORNIA
3 pre-existing museums with a lovely garden in Oakland hosting special tours every first Sunday of the month at 1pm.
This museum is a mine of information on California's history and culture. It's quite imposing, and well worth spending a few hours in - or even coming all the way from San Francisco just to see it! Its collection is the result of the merger of three pre-existing museums: theOakland Public Museum dating from 1910, theOakland Art Museum from 1916 and the Museum of Natural History founded in 1922. The exhibition is well conceived, contemporary and interesting, with a variety of media (paintings, objects, interactive videos, etc.). You'll learn all about the concept of the Californian dream (and myth) and the state's history, which is presented in all its different aspects over three floors. Some rooms are dedicated to Native Americans and their culture (at least what remains of it today). Others are dedicated to the gold rush, the first pioneers and the development of West Coast cities, as well as to minorities, who have a more important voice here than in other states.
Not to be missed: the museum's lovely garden, which adds a short trail to the exhibition, special tours, a children's area to keep the little ones occupied, and interesting temporary exhibitions. From April to October, admission to the museum entitles visitors every Friday to musical activities and concerts, a food truck and a nocturnal tour. From time to time, the museum organizes events around Californian culture that are not to be missed.
