KEBIR MOSQUE
Paphos' main mosque, in the upper town. Formerly a Catholic church, converted into a mosque in the century.
This mosque (Τζαμί Κεπήρ/Tzami Kebir, Cami-i Kebir), whose name means "great" in Arabic, is a former 12th-century Catholic church dedicated to Saint Sophia and converted around 1590 by Governor Mehmet Bey Ebubekir. Dominating the former Turkish Cypriot quarter of Mouttalos with its 40 m-high minaret, it was spared the violence of 1974. But it remains closed to worship. It is also known as Cami Büyük ("great mosque" in Turkish), Mouttalos, Ebubekir or Agia Sofia. In Ktima, 200 m north of the municipal market.
