AGIA PARASKEVI CHURCH IN GEROSKIPOU
Superb church whose architecture inspired the Périgord school movement in France. frescoes.
This Greek Orthodox church (Ιερός Ναός Αγίας Παρασκευής/Ireos Naos Agias Paraskevis) is one of the finest examples of 9th-century Cypriot architecture. Dedicated to the martyred Paraskevis of Rome (2nd century), it was built on the site of a temple to Aphrodite. It is the oldest building of the "church with row of domes" type: here, three domes in a row from the 9th century. This Cypriot technique remained marginal, with only six buildings, including the Agios Lazaros church in Larnaka. But it inspired the Périgord school: Saint-Étienne church in Périgueux and Saint-Martin church in Angers, cathedrals in Saintes and Périgueux... The 15th-century frescoes are fairly well preserved. As you enter, you face five episodes from the Passion: the Last Supper, the washing of the feet, Judas' kiss, Jesus before Pontius Pilate and Simon of Cyrene helping Christ to carry the cross. On the opposite wall, four Orthodox feasts: Lazarus Saturday, Palm Sunday, the Nativity of Mary and the Presentation of Mary in the Temple. The2nd dome is adorned with the Orante: the Virgin and Christ Child open their hands in prayer. Below, the large Crucifixion scene has lost its central part, revealing a portion of the 12th-century fresco of the Dormition of the Mother of God. On the south side, two Orthodox feasts: the Nativity and the Baptism of Christ. Finally, behind the19th-century iconostasis, the last dome houses the oldest fresco: a crux gemmata.
