AVAKAS GORGE
A 3 km-long gorge with a 1.2 km trail. Superb Natura 2000 site. Rich flora. Beware of flooding.
This 3 km-long incised passage (Φαραγγι Αβακα/Farangi Avaka) was carved out by the Avaka River. It is laid out with a 1.2 km trail. Entry is via Toxeftra beach, 2.5 km north of Cape Drepanon. It's best not to go there during high-water periods, but it's a splendid spot with cliffs up to 30 m high. Classified as a Natura 2000 site, the gorge is part of the Pegia state forest. It is home in particular to the Phoenician juniper and an endemic flower, the Akamas knapweed. Near the entrance, the Viklari tavern is open in summer.
