FORMER POLEMI CAMP
British detention camp with watchtower and barbed wire, used to interrogate Greek Cypriot suspects in 1958.
This former British detention camp (Στρατόπεδο Συγέντρωσης Πολεμίου/Stratopedo Sygentrosis Polemiou, Polemi Concentration Camp) operated for just three months in 1958. But it was reputed to be the worst of the dozen or so prison camps set up across the island during the 1955-1959 war of independence. Around a thousand Greek Cypriot detainees were held here for interrogation, and were frequently tortured and brutalized. Surrounded by barbed wire and dominated by a watchtower, the site is quick to visit.
