CHRYSOROYIATISSA MONASTERY
Monastery dedicated to the Virgin of "Golden Grenada". Beautiful architecture, icons, splendid views and fine wines.
Situated at an altitude of 830 m, this Greek Orthodox monastery (Ιερά Μονή Χρυσορρογιάτισσας/Iera Moni Chrysorrogiatissas) enjoys splendid views over the region. It's home to a community of monks and several allegedly miraculous icons attracting many pilgrims, mainly Russian Orthodox. There is also a cellar producing fine wines. Most of the current buildings date from after the 1967 fire, or from the 1770s. But the complex was founded in 1152 by a monk to house a "miraculous" icon of the Virgin Mary, known as the "Golden Pomegranate" (Chrysoroyiatissa), in reference to the fruit symbolizing fertility in Greek culture since antiquity. Its original name was changed for Puritan reasons, as this nursing Virgin was once known as the "Golden Nipple" (Chrysogalaktoussa). This icon, attributed to Saint Luke, is placed in the church's iconostasis, itself richly decorated. Outside, a large terrace offers superb panoramic views of the surrounding vineyards and arid valleys. Note in passing the "Chrysoroyiatissa pine", a venerable Calabrian pine that has been present here since the late 19th century. The monastery's winemakers organize tastings by prior arrangement (+357 26 72 24 57), away from the complex, in a winery located slightly to the west. But you can visit part of the old cellar here. Bottles can be found in the boutique, which also sells fine honey, sweets, icons, candles and more.
