PAPHOS FOREST
This 700 state forest is the largest wooded area in Cyprus. Beautiful wild landscapes north of Panagia.
This 700 km2 state forest (Δάσος Πάφου/Dasos Pafou) is the green lung of Cyprus. It extends over the western part of the Troodos massif, between the districts of Paphos and Nicosia. Managed by the National Forestry Office, it is the largest wooded area in Cyprus, covering 7.5% of the island's surface area. Dominated by Mount Tripylos, at an altitude of 1,362 m, it is made up of both deciduous trees, such as the Cyprus golden oak (Quercus alnifolia) and the plane tree (Platanus orientalis), and conifers, such as the Calabrian pine (Pinus brutia) and the Cyprus cedar (Cedrus brevifolia). The area is home to numerous species of flora and fauna, in particular the Cyprus mouflon, the country's symbol animal. Humans, on the other hand, are a rare sight. There are just three villages in the Paphos forest: Mylikouri, Tsakistra and Kombos. They are located in the eastern part of the Nicosia district. The main places to visit are described in the chapter on the Troodos, in particular the great monastery of Kykkos, the forest museum of Kombos and the superb Cedar Valley. The latter occupies the center of the Paphos forest. It lies 23 km north of Panagia. To reach it, take the E 740 road, which passes through magnificent wild landscapes. Nearby is the forestry station of Stavros tis Psokas, with captive Cyprus bighorn sheep, hiking trails, a café-restaurant, picnic areas and a campsite.
