APHRODITE BATHS
A spring linked to a legend about the Greek goddess of Love and the main point of entry to the Akamas National Forest Park.
This water source (Λουτρά της Αφροδίτης/Loutra tis Afroditis, Baths of Aphrodite) is the most visited site in the Akamas National Forest Park. According to local tradition, this is the place where the Greek goddess of Beauty and Love came to bathe and where she met her lover Adonis. Here, the tiny coastal river Afroditis emerges from a grotto to cascade gently into a pool 5 m in diameter. The spring is landscaped with a botanical garden (plane trees, fig trees, Cyprus golden oaks, carob trees, laurels...) and a bird observatory. The place is cool and pleasant in summer. But it's also crowded in summer, with hundreds of visitors sometimes at the same time, as the area around the spring is a hotbed of tourist activity: here, at the end of the asphalt road from Polis, is the main entrance to the national forest park. Here you'll find a small information center, free parking, the start and finish of the Aphrodite and Adonis hiking trails (both circular and 7.5 km long), a campsite, the Baths of Aphrodite restaurant (9am-9pm) with terrace above Aphrodite beach, and agencies offering quad or 4x4 excursions along the peninsula's trails. Fortunately, the Office National des Forêts, which manages the area, is planning to bring some order to the situation. In theory, only hikers and government vehicles should now be allowed into the national park.
