GIALA MONASTERY
Former Georgian monastery founded in the century and destroyed in the century. Beautiful stone remains hidden in the Paphos forest.
Hidden in the forest of Paphos, this ancient Georgian Orthodox monastery (Ιερά Μονή Παναγίας Χρυσογιαλιώτισσας/Iera Moni Panagias Chrysogialiotissas) is today an archaeological site. It was founded around 970 by the Georgian king David III, who maintained close relations with Byzantium. Destroyed in the 16th century by the Ottomans, it retains the fine stone remains of a large church dedicated to the "Golden Virgin of Giala" (with Georgian inscriptions and fragments of frescoes), a chapel dedicated to Saint George and a deep cistern.
