WINTERHAVEN HOTEL
Winterhaven Beachfront Hotel, one of the tallest structures on Ocean Drive, featuring the tasty Italian restaurant
This Art Deco building built in 1939 is one of the tallest structures on Ocean Drive. The hotel has been beautifully renovated to retain its original charm: Art Deco mosaic on the lobby floor, wooden furniture, vintage wallpaper in the 71 rooms... It is also perfectly located, not far from the lively Española Way and its many restaurants, but you can also opt for Il Bolognese, the hotel's tasty Italian restaurant. There's no pool, but after all, what's the big deal when the beach is right across the street?

Everything else is a disaster at this hotel. I’ll list just an extract of things which shouldn’t be:
- Resort fee is a scam. The narrative of “free water and free beach chairs” is ridiculous. Water is free at every Marriott hotel and should not be a privilege. The “beach chairs” is a nicely hidden scam, because the only thing included is literally a chair. For the umbrella you have to pay $25 extra. Enough said.
- The rooms are smaller than NYC’s mini apartments. To the level that it is ridiculous. You pay a super heavy nightly rate (>$400/night) and you get a 150sqft (12m2) room with a bathroom where i couldn’t even stretch my arms
- The views. Are non-existent. 90% of the rooms have one small window with a view of the next building’s wall. Like my room - see pic attached
- The old AC equipment is installed under the window and blows full force cold air onto the bed. If you don’t turn it off overnight, have fun waking up with a sore throat or a cold (worst case). Ridiculous design.
- Service for a Titanium Elite Member: non-existent. I reached out 24h in advance and asked if there are any upgrades available for my anniversary celebration. The answer was: we will try our best. I’m not angry that i got the standard room despite my effort, but the fact that nobody informed me that there are high chances i will get a small standard room with a view of a wall. They didn’t give me a chance to cancel and book another hotel with decent rooms. Simply because they didn’t care that it is a special occasion for me, and this circumstance could ruin my whole trip
- The interior does not pass any minimum standard of a typical Autograph Collection hotels. I’m astonished that this hotel was approved for the Marriott Autograph portfolio. US standards are just not what they were anymore…
I will give a small shoutout to the manager, who reached out to me at the end and offered some small compensation for the disappointing experience. Thank you, but my morals force me to be fair and open with my reviews for potential future guests…
Buena atención
Correctas habitaciones
Muy limpio
The room is small but that was not an issue since there is so much to do outside ! Only issue was the noise outside every morning very early (6:30)
The location et great obviously, the valet parking is super convenient and not expensive (not as I would expect in a big city).
Again we want to recognize the phenomenal staff of this hotel.
