Sanibel and Captiva Islands are two unspoiled islands in West Florida, accessible from Fort Myers via a 5 km bridge. Two-thirds of Sanibel Island is a nature reserve, the J.N. 'Ding' Darling Reserve, home to numerous species of birds, animals and exotic plants. A visit to this reserve is a must for nature lovers. On the island, you can also visit the lighthouse, symbol of the island, and the Bailey-Matthews Shell Museum, featuring shells from the region and around the world. Shell collecting is a very popular activity on the island, and it's not uncommon to see people doing it as soon as the sun rises. Off Sanibel lies the USS Mohawk, a World War II ship that was recently submerged. To the north of Sanibel lies Captiva, a smaller island with a charming, colorful downtown and some lovely properties.
