Natural refuge in Sanibel and Captiva Islands with a bird watching tower with a panoramic view of the reserve.
The "Ding" Darling, as it is called by the locals, is a natural refuge offering extremely interesting and exotic walks through its tropical flora, to meet the protected animal species that inhabit it. A 6 kilometer drive takes you through the main points of interest in the park, where bird watching is best. These thousands of birds are the primary reason for the refuge's existence. In the middle of the route, an observation tower provides a panoramic view of the preserve. Start your visit at the Visitor Center where a very interesting and quick exhibition reconstituting the different biotopes of the park is waiting for you. Volunteers will explain to you the best places for observation and the main rules: no more than 15 miles per hour, and always stop your car on the right side. The ride can also be done by bike (rented from Tarpon Bay Explorers), one of the most popular means of transportation on the islands, for a 6.7 km ride through the mangrove-ringed paths and past the swamps. The magic of the place still works. Visit the refuge at low tide for maximum wildlife viewing. A single female crocodile has taken up residence in the reserve, although this is not geographically her natural habitat. In summer, it can be observed in the bay, while kayaking or on a cruise with the Tarpon Bay Explorers.
